Easy Crochet Super Chunky Jumper

If you're looking for a beginner’s crochet project then this easy to make, easy to alter Super Chunky Jumper is for you.

We were looking for a modern statement sweater for our "Crazy for Crafts" window and just love the 'Wool and the Gang Dreamin Jumper' for its modern simplicity. However as a recent crochet convert (some may call it an addiction) I thought "How hard could it be to crochet something like that?", turns out it's not hard at all. So read on if you want to make a version for yourself!

Because of the oversized nature of this sweater, it fits a wide range of sizes (our mannequin is only a size 10 and I'm a generous 16 and it suits both) but I'll give suggestions on how to figure out different sizes at the end

Materials needed:

- 12mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain correct gauge

- Approx 720m of Super Chunky Yarn (I used 9 balls of Wool & the Gang's Crazy Sexy Wool or you could go with 6 balls of Stylecraft Special XL for a more budget friendly option)

- Large Needle to sew in ends

To suit up to 100cm/ 40” chest

Gauge: 6 stitches x 4 rows = 10x10cm (4x4") square in HDC

Front & Back (make 2 of same):

Finished size 55cm x 52cm approx

Chain 35

Row 1: HDC in second chain from hook & HDC to end, turn

Row 2 - 22: Chain 2, HDC to end, turn

Sleeves (make 2 of same):

Finished size 36 x 42cm approx

Chain 25

Row 1: HDC in second chain from hook & HDC to end, turn

Row 2 - 16: Chain 2, HDC to end, turn

Finishing

I simply joined everything using single crochet, with the right sides facing each other (so you’d be looking at the wrong size), crochet lines marked in red in diagrams below

-Join front to back at the shoulders, leaving a 21cm gap in the centre for the neck

Line the centre of the arm piece up with the shoulder seam and crochet this together

Then fold this over and crochet along the sides of body and along the arm seams

Weave in any ends to finish

*A note on altering sizes*

If you need to make this larger or smaller it's easy to add or subtract some stitches from your starting chain. The easiest way to gauge how this will fit is by doing your starting chain and holding it across a top you really like the size of, start with the amount recommended and add or subtract to get the size you want. If you only add or subtract a stitch or 2 then leave the sleeves the same, if you go or down by more add a stitch to your sleeve starting chain, 1 stitch on the sleeve for every 3 stitches on the body should do the trick

So that's it. I hope you found this helpful and use it as a springboard for your own imagination, once you realise it's just 4 squares joined together the possibilities are endless, go for stripes or block colours and most of all have fun!
